THE STORY OF THE IRON DOG
In a quiet peaceful spot hidden among the moss laden trees, enclosed
within a high brick wall, is a little cemetery, known as the Job Routh
Private Burial Ground, located on Homochitto street across from the beautiful
old family home "Dunleith."
Near the center of the lot stands a large vault surmounted by an
iron, life sized, figure of a Newfoundland dog. Buried in the vault is
Walton Pembroke Smith, son of Wm. H. Smith and wife Mary Bell Madison.
He was born in Madison County, Va., Aug. 7th, 1810, died Aug. 28, 1866,
also his wife Anna E. Williams born in Tensas Parish, La. Oct. 1st, 1820,
died Oct. 4th, 1889.
When Walton P. Smith was a lad living in Virginia, he one day fell
into the Potomac river. He was rescued by a faithful Newfoundland dog.
The memory of this dog was with him so constantly, that one day while in
New York he visited one of the large iron works, having a figure made from
his description of the dog.
He so treasured this figure during life that they thought it fitting
to have this dog stand guard over him in death.
This vault also stands as a monument to others buried near-by. Dr.
J. Davidson Smith, Haller Routh Smith, William Madison Smith and Mary Lane
Routh.
