Introduction
The library of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History in
Jackson, Mississippi has a xerographic copy of a weak carbon copy of a
cemetery list produced under the auspices of the W. P. A. (Works Progress
Administration) during 1936/1937.
The earliest date on the document is June 5, 1936, and the latest
is March 27, 1937. The cover letter names this as "Inscriptions And Locations
Of Forty Nine Private Cemeteries In Adams County Mississippi" and is Signed
by Lelia H. Mulvihill, County Supervisor, Historical Research Project.
This work is also identified as "Project #2986" and "District Six". Listed
on this report are the others that helped with it's preparation: Mrs. Amanda
W. Phipps, Miss Allie Marsh, Miss Leona Herman, Miss Katrina Perrault and
Josephine Kaiser.
During this same time period, perhaps simultaneously, an almost exact
word for word copy was created in the format requested by the D.A.R. for
their library. No date or name can be located in the D.A.R. book to indicate
the date or person that was responsible for this work. The D.A.R. book
leaves out a small amount of the information contained in the W.P.A. book,
and has some information not in the W.P.A. book, each book is just slightly
different. This work is an effort to bring the information from the two
books together, re-type it for clarity and provide a surname index.
The Kibbe-Tucker Cemetery has been re-surveyed and information for
the Stowers, the Foster-Speed & Oakley Grove cemeteries has been added
by Mrs. L. R. McGehee, Route 6, Box 223, Natchez, Miss. The "Cliffs" plantation
cemetery was surveyed by Anne Vaughn and the information typescripted By
Ronald W. Miller, Mississippi Department of Archives and History. The information
for the Saragossa & Longwood cemeteries was found on unsigned sheets
in the Archives And History Cemetery files. Confederate Memorial Park was
surveyed and added 6/14/87. The Van Court Cemetery was re-surveyed and
added October 11, 1987, with the assistance of Thomas D. Perry, 122 Rosehill
drive, Natchez, MS. Also - the Smith cemetery was added by Mr. Perry on
October 16, 1987. He has also corrected and added to the listings for the
Kingston cemetery and added the Hutchins-Mayfield, the Pine Log cemetery
and the Cherry Grove cemetery. Carolyn Martin Cole, 803 N. Union St., Natchez,
supplied corrections & additions to the McCullough & Perkins Cemetery
and added the information for the Solitary Valley Cemetery on July 27,
1988. Mrs. Ruth Emerick supplied the information on the Gardens cemetery
May 10, 1989. Mrs. Mavis O. Feltus, 102 Melrose, Natchez supplied the information
for the Wayside Plantation/Cole Tract cemetery on November 14, 1989 and
Beechland cemetery on December 15, 1989. The Soldiers Retreat Cemetery
was re-surveyed and corrections made by Margaret F. Green on January 22,
1996. Additional information was added to the Monette cemetery listing
on March 26, 1996 by Robert Shumway. The Grove Plantation Cemetery was
added from a list made February 9, 1996 by Mr. Eugene J. Parker and her
sister Mrs. John M. Jones who lives at Grove Plantation.
