Obituary, Natchez Democrat Newspaper, Thursday Morning, October 4, 1956.
Dr. Francis S. Dixon, one of Natchez most prominent physicians and beloved
citizens, who died at 8 o'clock Wednesday morning, will be laid to rest
today (Thursday) after services at 4 o'clock from the Trinity Episcopal
Church. The Rev. Louis O'Vander Thomas will officiate. Dr. Dixon was born
in Natchez on November 3, 1900, the son of the late J. Foggo and Janie
Sharp Dixon. Early in life he decided that he wanted to become a doctor
and after graduation from Natchez High School worked for many months as
a teller at Britton and Koontz Bank here in order to obtain the money which
would enable him to receive the education necessary for a medical career.
He was later graduated from the University of Mississippi and the Tulane
Medical School, where he received his MD degree. After leaving Tulane,
he came to Natchez and set up a private practice. During this time he served
as superintendent of Natchez Charity Hospital. Following this period, he
went back into private practice and for many years served this area not
only as a doctor of medicine and surgery but also as a civic leader, becoming
endeared to the many types of people with whom he came associated with
in life. Francis Dixon was considered one of the most beloved practitioners
in Natchez after he had established himself. He treated many people who
were poor; people from all walks of life: every class, every denomination
and those with every creed. These people he treated as a physician, and
all those who knew him as a friend and fellow citizen will deeply mourn
his passing along with the members of his family. Dr. Dixon was a Fellow
in the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Medical Association,
the Homochitto Valley Medical Society, a Shriner and belonged to many other
organizations. He is survived by his widow, Virginia Butler Dixon; two
brothers, Joseph F. Dixon and John F. Dixon; both of Natchez; three sisters,
Mrs. Marion G. Stewart, Natchez; Mrs. Horace S. Roberts, Jackson and Mrs.
H. Hamilton Calhoun of Baton Rouge. Pallbearers will be Greenberry Kelly,
D. Y. Williams, Dr. J. L. Henderson, James A. Clinton, Orrick Metcalfe,
Theodore Bauer, John Temple and Richard T. Harris Jr.
