Last Update 23 August 2003

Jones County was named for John Paul Jones naval hero of the Revolutionary War.

Ellisville was founded in the early 1800's and became the county seat when the county was founded in 1826. It was named for Pohaten Ellis, member of the Supreme Court and US Senate.

The first families to settle here were the Knights, Welches, Robertsons and Duckworths.

In 1861 there were 1,280 families in Jones County. Pettus was the Governor of Mississippi, J. M. Baylis and J. D. Powell were two representatives from ones County and L. Q. C. Lamar was Senator.
