Jones County was
named for John Paul Jones naval hero of the Revolutionary War.
Ellisville was founded
in the early 1800's and became the county seat when the county was founded
in 1826. It was named for Pohaten Ellis, member of the Supreme Court and
US Senate.
The first families
to settle here were the Knights, Welches, Robertsons and Duckworths.
In 1861 there were
1,280 families in Jones County. Pettus was the Governor of Mississippi,
J. M. Baylis and J. D. Powell were two representatives from ones County
and L. Q. C. Lamar was Senator.
