There are many arguments both pro and con for belonging to Historical and Genealogical Associations - but belonging to a family association such as your Jenny Wiley Association can promote the development of a stronger feeling of kinship among descendants, and it can promote a greater appreciation of our ancestral family and our grandmother, who to many, is just a fairy tale, someone created and now a real live human who walked these valleys and streams long ago. The most apparent advantage of membership is the opportunity to get together several times a year at our quarterly meetings, but the greatest of these is our annual "Jenny Wiley Homecoming" each year in October. An opportunity to renew old friendships and make new ones. Members develop a level of social interaction that fosters a stronger feeling of kinship in our "Jenny Wiley Family." Satisfaction resulting from the discovery of belonging to an even larger kinship group can be a life enriching experience. Although the opportunity to learn more about our ancestral family may not be as apparent, it is no less important. As we gain new or greater insight into what our ancestors were like, as a people, and what their contributions to the development of our country were, we come to more fully appreciate them. A better understanding of our ancestors helps one to see more clearly how they have influenced our own lives. We have an opportunity to allow their positive influence to continue to live through us. Also, understanding the ancestor to descendant relationship is helpful in delineating our own role as the link between our ancestors and descendants. As we ponder this issue, we are reminded that our descendants will one day examine our performances, just as we have that of our ancestors. Only to the extent that our stories are made clear, and that our descendants find them worthy of repeating, will our influence live on through them. What could be more exciting or important than finding parts of ourselves in our ancestor, dark hair, heavy overhanging brows, superior intelligence, and a persistent and determined attitude, and helping our descendants to find bits of these characteristics in themselves. To fully reap the benefits of the Jenny Wiley Association, we encourage you to become a member, then become an active member. Encourage your family members to join, and be more active by attending our meetings, and most importantly, our annual Jenny Wiley Homecoming, held the second weekend in October at Prestonsburg, Kentucky during the Jenny Wiley Pioneer Festival. -- Jim Daniels
