Inhabitants of Mississippi in 1816

Submitted by Sue Burns Moore sbmoore@swbell.net

Source: The Official and Statistical Register of the State of Mississippi, Centennial Edition, 1917, by Dunbar Rowland, Director of the Department of Archives and History, printed in Madison, Wisconsin, by the Democrat Printing Company.

According to Dunbar Rowland, “It will be noted that tax lists of certain counties have been used in this compilation.  These are largely in accord with census returns, and are used for the reason that the census rolls of these counties are not available.”  Adams County was one of the counties where the tax roll was employed.

Take caution in using a search feature with this material.  Census takers/tax assessors often spelled phonetically.  In addition, the transcriber may have made mistakes, too, copying from and trying to interpret the original. This particular tax roll has many misspellings.
